How do I care for solid wood furniture?

In short: keep solid wood away from direct heat and sunlight, dust it with a soft, dry cloth, use coasters and mats, and wipe up any spills straight away.

Everyday care

Dust regularly with a soft, dry or very slightly damp cloth, following the direction of the grain.
Dry the surface right away with a clean cloth if you have wiped it with anything damp.
Avoid abrasive cleaners, all-purpose sprays and silicone-based polishes, as these can damage the finish over time.

Protect it from heat and sunlight

Solid wood is a natural material and reacts to its surroundings. To keep yours looking its best:

Position it away from radiators, fireplaces and other direct heat sources.
Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can fade or lighten the colour.
Try to keep the room at a fairly stable temperature and humidity, as very dry or damp air can cause the timber to move.

Guard against spills and marks

Use coasters, placemats and runners to protect against heat, moisture and scratches.
Wipe up spills immediately to stop liquid soaking into the wood.
Lift objects rather than dragging them across the surface, and consider felt pads under lamps and ornaments.
