Cushion softening and timber movement
‹ Back to After-Sales & Warranty help
In short: a little cushion softening and slight natural movement in timber are normal characteristics of quality furniture as it settles into your home. They are not faults, so they are not covered by the warranty.
Cushion softening and settlement
As you use your sofa or chair, the foam and fibre fillings gradually soften and settle. This is completely normal and is a sign the cushions are moulding to you, not a loss of quality or support. You may also notice some creasing and relaxing of the covers with use.
- Plump and dress fibre-filled cushions regularly to keep their shape.
- Rotate and swap reversible seat and back cushions so they wear evenly.
- Expect a little give to develop in the first weeks of use as everything settles.
Timber movement
Solid wood is a natural material that responds to the temperature and humidity around it, so it can expand and contract very slightly over time. Small, natural characteristics are part of its charm rather than defects:
- Slight movement at joints, and fine surface checks, can appear as the wood adjusts to your home.
- Variation in grain, knots and colour is natural and means no two pieces are identical.
- Keeping the room at a stable temperature and humidity helps to keep movement to a minimum.

Good to know
These are natural settling-in characteristics, not manufacturing faults, so they fall outside the warranty. A genuine fault, such as a collapsed frame or a failed seam, is a different matter and is covered. See my item has a fault, what will you do? Whatever you buy, your statutory rights always apply.
